Dogs are known to be the most loyal of all the animals and are good companions to children as well as adults. Poodle is a breed of dog that is considered to be the second most intelligent dog. Poodles come in varied coat colors and are available in three different sizes namely standard, miniature and toy. They were originally bred to be water dogs. They are very obedient and agile. Like with every pet, Poodles too need early training to properly channelize their energy and educate them to be obedient pets. Among the problems faced by Poodle owners, Poodle biting tops the list.
When they are small puppies Poodles are cute and poodle biting is not such a menace. However, as they grow up into big dogs with large teeth, if they haven’t overcome the habit, then it would lead to lot of nuisance. If the puppy is biting then the first thing to notice is the way people are playing with it. Many people feel that poodles bite more than any other kinds of dogs bite. The major reason for this could be that poodles are very cuddly and people reach out to pick them or pat them in ways that they don’t like to be picked or patted.
As poodles are the smarter, it would be simpler to train them on overcoming this habit of biting. The training needs to begin when they are still young. The puppy should begin at 8 weeks to socialize with the owner and his/her family and the other pets at home.
The first step to stop poodle biting is to give the poodle a toy whenever he bites. One way of letting the poodle know that biting hurts is to make soft whimpering noise. The poodle will be teething and is just looking for relief by biting. If the poodle continues to bite then try putting his leg in its mouth so that it understands the pain. Avoid giving fingers and hands to chew on right from the beginning. If he continues to bite then give him strong commands to not bite and if it still persists then ignore him for some time and then resume playing. This will get the message across to him of the bad social habits.
If this problem persists with an older dog then it is high time to get control over the canine. Adult poodle biting could be the result of playful behavior or because the dog is afraid and anxious. The aggressive tendency, which could be the result of anxiety and fear, must be overcome. If the poodle biting habit still persists then it is time to take the advice of an expert who would deal with it in a very professional manner.
The poodle should know that biting is not acceptable at all. Poodle biting is a matter of deep concern. If the training is done in the right and authoritative manner your pet is bound to overcome this habit very early in its life.
